She didn’t laugh. I said, “How funny,” and went on eating. I had no answer I could give Maddie, and I wasn’t going to ask Grady in front of her.

Not one of them had asked why Brynn already had a key to our back door the day she moved in.

I’m Joelle. I’m 41, and I manage rental properties. I have read every lease on our street, including the one for the gray house next door. Brynn Carver moved in three weeks earlier. I’d known her since she was sixteen, when she babysat for Grady’s sister.

I watched her carry boxes in from my kitchen window. Before the movers arrived, she had a key on a red plastic ring. The next morning, I found our back door unlocked. I never leave it unlocked.

At first, I tried to make each thing explain itself. Grady had given Brynn our old patio chairs.

He and his brother moved the kids’ old swing set to her yard one Saturday. I saw my white casserole dish on her counter. Three Saturdays in a row, Grady said he was helping her hang shelves.

I knew the things were ours. What I didn’t know was what Grady had told Brynn, or what he had told Maddie. I kept asking myself whether I was making too much of it. That was easier than asking him directly.

The gray house belongs to a company called JLK Holdings. The initials are mine, from my maiden name. Grady thinks we rent our own house, too. He has never asked who receives the rent check we write every month.

I sent Brynn a welcome letter on Tuesday. It listed the deposit she had paid and included a note that the red-ringed back-door key did not belong to her rental.

On Saturday, Brynn held a housewarming party on her deck. She invited the whole street. Grady’s family came, sixteen people or maybe more. I went because Maddie begged me to.

Brynn stood with a glass of wine and a piece of paper. “Okay, everybody! I have to read this. My landlord sent the sweetest welcome letter!”

She read it line by line, laughing. When she reached the note about the key, she paused.

“Please note that the back-door key on the red ring does not belong to this property.”

She gave a high little laugh. “That’s weird. Whatever.”

The guests laughed with her. I didn’t. I had sent the letter four days earlier.

Lorene came up beside me at the snack table. She held a paper plate she hadn’t touched.

“Joelle,” she said quietly, “I told him not to do this.”

“Do what, Lorene?”

“I’ve known for a month. I told him it would come out.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

She looked down at her plate. “I’m telling you now. Please don’t hate me.”

Every Sunday for sixteen years, I had taken Lorene a pan of lasagna in my white casserole dish. Every Monday, it came back to my porch empty. No note. Not once. Now it was on Brynn’s counter.

I wanted to ask Lorene what she had known for a month. I also wanted to ask why she had let me keep bringing her dinner while she knew my husband was arranging something next door. Instead, I said, “You knew about the key?”

“I knew he was helping her,” she said. “I didn’t know about the key.”

That answer didn’t settle anything. She didn’t offer another one.

Brynn’s deposit had been paid with a credit card in Grady’s father’s name. His father had died six years earlier. I went to the funeral and held Lorene’s hand. I didn’t know who had been using that card.

At 7:40, Grady pulled me behind the garage, away from the party.

“Jo, listen. I can pay you back whatever. Or I can say I’m sorry in front of everybody. But I can’t do both.”

“Why not both?”

“Because I don’t have the money, Jo.”

I looked at him, waiting for him to add something. He didn’t.

“What are you apologizing for?” I asked.

“For how this looks.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He rubbed his forehead. “I know.”

I had expected him to deny it, or tell me I had misunderstood.

Instead, he was already negotiating what he could afford to admit. Money would mean he had to repay it. An apology in front of his family would mean saying there was something to apologize for. He was offering only one.

I hadn’t decided which one I would take.

When we returned to the deck, Brynn was holding up the red-ringed key.

“Anybody know what door this goes to?” she asked the crowd.

Maddie tugged my hand. “Mommy, that’s our key.”

The whole deck went quiet.

I walked up the steps and took the letter from Brynn’s hand.

“Brynn,” I said, “before you explain that key, explain to this whole party where you were on the day you got it.”

She glanced at Grady. “He gave it to me.”

Grady moved toward her. “Brynn, don’t.”

“Don’t what?” I said. “Answer me?”

Brynn looked at the guests, then back at me. “He said you knew.”

“I didn’t.”

She lowered the key. “He said things were changing. He said you were going to be gone.”

“Gone where?” I asked.

“I don’t know. He didn’t say.”

That was Maddie’s word, too. Surprise. I looked at Grady.

“You let her tell our daughter I was going away.”

“I didn’t tell her to say it like that.”

“Then what did you tell her?”

He glanced at the people listening. “Not here.”

“You’ve been doing this here. You gave her our things here. You gave her the key. You’ve been telling her something about me, and Maddie heard enough to think I was leaving.”

Brynn shook her head once. “He said you two were finished.”

Grady’s face tightened. “I said we weren’t doing well.”

“You told her I was going away,” I said. “You told Maddie it was a surprise.”

“I didn’t tell Maddie that.”

“She repeated what Brynn told her.”

“I didn’t think she’d say it that way.”

He spoke quickly, as if the problem were the wording and not the fact that he had kept the conversation from me. I looked at Brynn.

“Why did you take the key?”

“She said he told me you knew,” she said. “I thought it was okay.”

“And the things? The chairs, the swing set, my dish?”

“I thought he was giving them to me.”

“He did,” I said. “That’s the part I’m trying to understand.”

Grady said my name again. There were sixteen people around us, maybe more, and I could see Lorene standing near the snack table. No one reached for the letter or tried to make a joke this time.

I asked Grady, “Do you want to apologize, or pay me back?”

He looked down. “I already told you. I can’t do both.”

I had been waiting for an explanation that would make the last few weeks smaller. There wasn’t one. He had given Brynn a key to our home, given her things that belonged to us, and spoken about me as if I had already left. He had let Maddie hear enough to repeat it.

“Then keep your money,” I said.

He looked up. “Joelle, ”

“I’m not asking you to apologize in front of them. I’m telling you I won’t pretend the money fixes this.”

Brynn handed me the key. I put it with the letter and told her she couldn’t use it again. She nodded. She didn’t try to explain the letter or laugh it off.

Maddie stood beside me, quiet now. I told her, “You’re not going anywhere. I’m right here.”

She leaned against me. Grady didn’t say anything to her.

I left with Maddie. Grady stayed at the party with his family. Lorene didn’t follow us, and I didn’t ask her to.

I still don’t know who used his father’s card. Grady never answered that. I did know he had told Brynn our marriage was finished before he had told me what he planned to do.

The key came back to me. The chairs and swing set did too. My casserole dish was returned later, empty, with no note. I stopped taking Lorene lasagna on Sundays.

Grady’s offer didn’t repair what he had done, and I didn’t take either option. I told him we would have to discuss what came next, but I would not keep living as though the decision had already been made for me.

He had been telling other people I was going away. I told him myself that I wasn’t agreeing to stay married on those terms.

While I was at work, my new neighbor told my daughter she was going to be her new mommy.
